Rising Sun Motor Inn and Cabins
About The Rising Sun Motor Inn and Cabins
Construction began at Rising Sun in 1940. It was known at that time as “East Glacier Auto Camp” except on National Park Service maps where it was originally identified as Roes Creek after Charles Rose Yellow Fish, who was part Blackfeet. The difference in spellings was caused by a typographical error on Park maps.
When its first guests arrived one year later the property boasted 19 cabins, a coffee shop, and a campstore. The present building that now houses the coffee shop, office, and kitchen was built in 1976. The original coffee shop was converted into additional motel units, enabling Rising Sun Motor Inn to increase its capacity to 72 rooms. The Inn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 4, 1996.
During the 1940s there were two locations named “East Glacier.” In April of 1950, the citizens of Glacier Park Station, where Glacier Park Lodge is located, successfully petitioned the National Park Service to have the name changed to East Glacier Park. In the fall of that same year, the East Glacier Auto Camp was renamed Rising Sun, conforming to National Park Service maps. Interestingly, during the war years of 1943-1945 all the facilities of Glacier National Park were closed with the exception of Rising Sun.
The complex is positioned adjacent to spectacular St. Mary Lake and is surrounded by soaring mountain peaks. All guestrooms at Rising Sun Motor Inn and Cabins are rustic, yet comfortable. In keeping with the era in which the rooms were built, they offer guests limited amenities and old-world style accommodations resulting in a one-of-a kind National Park lodging experience. A limited number of ADA-accessible rooms are available and are booked based on space available. Only designated guide, service, and/or hearing companion animals are allowed in the Lodge.
Red Bus tours and boat cruises are available at this centralized location. The self parking lot is located a short walk from the motor inn and cottages. Depending on room location, parking may be available near each of the motor inns. Parking is limited in front of cottages to one vehicle.
